这部两集纪录片由江苏广播电视台与国家地理合拍，之后将通过国家地理进行全球播放。2500多年来，这条世界上最长、最古老的人工水道，滋养了无数中国人民，连接起了中国的过去、现在和未来。Andrew从黄金水道、绿色廊道、理水智慧、文化融合等四个主题出发，了解大运河的历史、技术与价值。一路上，他与跟大运河有着深刻联系的各行各业的中国人相识相交，既有生动的感受，也有深度的对话，为解读大运河提供了多样化的角度。
Andrew Field, an American historian of China, explores over twenty towns along the Grand Canal and shares the canal’s enduring significance through contemporary Chinese stories.
The two-part documentary co-produced by Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation and National Geographic, will be globally broadcasted through the latter. Over 2,500 years, the Grand Canal, the world's longest and oldest artificial waterway, has nourished the lives of countless Chinese, while bridging the past, present, and future of the country. Andrew Field explores its history, technology, and significance through four themes: the Golden Waterway, the Green Corridor, Water Management Wisdom, and Cultural Fusion. Along his journey, he engages with Chinese from all walks of life, showcasing diverse perspectives to uncover the canal’s story.

第三季以当代视角回顾早期神话和祖先历史，以礼制的孕育和发展为主线，探寻中华文明的源流。
有网友说，“中国之美，全在纪录片《中国123》里”，足见该系列在观众中的口碑。前两季用世界级的视听质感和极具思想性的叙事文本，梳理了从春秋到辛亥革命2000多年的历史流变。而第三季则是一场探源之旅，从复杂玄妙的神话到夏商周的体制，它弥补了前两季的时间空缺，也溯源了中华文化基因的内核。特别是，这一季在沿袭中国式审美的基础上，运用“原创绘画+CG特效”的方式，让关于上古文明的浪漫想象成为了现实。
