形容词 penitent 和 repentant

两个单词在字典里的解释几乎一样：

都是"忏悔的"之意。

不过，它们还是有小小的区别。

△ repentant 指某人对于自己的行为感到自责和后悔，并愿意通过行为改正错误。

名词形式为 repentance。

After stealing from the store, John felt repentant and returned the stolen items.

从店里偷了东西之后，John感到后悔，然后归还了所有赃物。

She was repentant for her harsh words and apologized to her friend.

她后悔自己说了那些刻薄的话，并向朋友道了歉。

△penitent 指对于自己的罪行，希望得到原谅，并改过自新。这个单词比 repentant 更加正式，常用于宗教和法律方面。

He showed himself to be truly penitent for his actions by making a substantial donation to the victim's family.

他真心忏悔自己的行为，并向受害者家属捐赠了大量财物。

The prisoner appeared penitent and ready to turn his life around.

犯人看来是真心悔过，准备好改过自新。

penitent 的名词为 penitence，不过这个单词不如另一个同源名词 penance 常用， 而 atonement 与 penance 词义最接近，两者的区别大概只有宗教不同之分 (前者用于基督教，后者为天主教)。

名词 remorse 和 contrition

相对而言，remorse 的悔过诚意不如 contrition：

△remorse 不如 contrition 真诚和发自内心，其目的有时候为害怕被惩罚而后悔。

它们各自的形容词为 remorseful 和 contrite，在使用频率上，前者不如后者。
