plight 源自诺曼时期的英语 (Anglo-French)，所以，它多少是有点法语血统的，最初它与古法语的 pleit 同一个意思：褶皱，辫子，相当于英语的 pleat /pli:t/ (褶皱)和 plait /pleɪt/ (褶皱，辫子)，后引申为困境，窘境。

We felt for the plight of the homeless.

The African elephant is in a desperate plight.

这是 plight 的第一个词义，更正式一些可以说 predicament /prɪ'dɪkəmənt/ 或 quandary /'kwɑːndərɪ/，前者与 plight 更接近一些，后者通常指 dilemma (进退两难)。

第二个词义在词源上和 pledge /pledʒ/ (誓言，承诺) 相同，兼作动词。当然，就使用频率来说，pledge 要高得多。
