豆腐是汉代中国人发明的，不过，它的英文单词 tofu 从1876年才开始出现，并非像大家想的借自中文，其实是日语单词とうふ的外来音译词。

豆腐也有纯正英文说法：bean curd。

很多人知道 bean 指豆子，但这个 curd 是啥？

curd 出现于16世纪，最初词义指任何凝结之物，现在通常用来指凝乳或凝乳状物，作名词用。

今天说的 curdle /'kɜːrdl/ 出自 curd，词义差不多，但词性不同，curdle 作动词，"凝结，凝固"，也可以指牛奶变坏，变酸。

The milk has curdled.

牛奶凝结了 / 变质了。

Too much heat will make the custard curdle.

= Too much heat will curdle the custard.

加热太久会使得蛋奶沙司凝固。

curdle 自然也可以指血液凝结，不过，常用短语 make someone's blood curdle 不能直译字面意思，它形容令人非常惊恐之意。

That strange sound made her blood curdle.

那个奇怪的声音让她毛骨悚然。

由此，bloodcurdling 这个单词就不难理解了：令人毛骨悚然的。

congeal /kən'dʒi:l/，coagulate /kəʊ'ægjʊleɪt/ ，clot /klɒt/，jell /dʒel/ 都可以指液体凝结，如血液凝固。

The blood has clotted / congealed / coagulated.

血已经凝固。

其中 congeal 和 jell 还具有比喻意义：

It takes a team a while to jell.

要让一个团队合作融洽需要一定时间。

The bitterness and tears had congealed into hatred.

苦难和眼泪凝聚成仇恨。

curdle 的近形词

cuddle /'kʌdl/ 与 curdle 词形相近，词源与词义都不相同。

cuddle 可能源自古法语，原指衣领，现义为"拥抱，依偎"。
