经典恐怖片，1992年第64届奥斯卡4项大奖得主《沉默的羔羊》(The Silence of the Lambs) 中有一段关于贪婪的著名台词：

汉尼拔在给克丽丝分析水牛比尔的杀人动机时，说：We begin by coveting what we see every day (我们贪图那些每天见到的东西)。

实际上，汉尼拔说的不仅是水牛比尔，更是我们每个人的人性弱点：贪婪，看到什么就起了贪念，总想占为己有，为达目的而不择手段。

台词中多次提到的 covet /'kʌvət/ 正这个意思：

He coveted the throne for a long time.

他觊觎王位已久。

He has long coveted the chance to work with the famous director.

他一直渴望与那位知名导演合作。

covet 的形容词有两个：coveted 和 covetous /'kʌvətəs/ ，简单的说，前者形容令人产生欲望的东西，后者指欲望本身：

"十诫 (The Ten Commandments) "是《圣经》中记载上帝借由以色列先知和众部族首领摩西向以色列民众颁布的十条戒律，又叫"摩西十诫"。

其中第十诫就是告诫人们不可贪婪：

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's (不可贪恋人的房屋，不可贪恋人的妻子，奴仆，牛驴，并他一切所有的)。

covet 的同义词：

与 covet 同为书面语的还有 crave /kreɪv/，thirst / yearn / pine / long / hanker / lust for 和 aspire to。

口语中，你可以用 have one's eye on 和 drool over，两种说法分别对应中文词语"觊觎"和"垂涎"，因为 drool 原义就是指流口水。
