The UNESCO World Heritage Committee approved the listing of the Archives of the International Solvay Conferences for Physics and Chemistry in its Memory of the World register.
Created by UNESCO in 1992, the Memory of the World Program aims to prevent the irrevocable loss of documentary heritage. This listing is a recognition of the exceptional universal value of the Solvay archives for humanity and the importance of preserving them for future generations.
Solvay is a chemical company with its headquarters in Brussels. Founded by Alfred and Ernest Solvay in 1863, this Belgian company is now a leading corporate working on bringing the technologies to many aspects of daily life.
The Solvay Conferences for Physics and Chemistry were the first international scientific conferences for leading figures in the international scientific community. The International Solvay Institute for Physics was founded by Ernest Solvay in 1912. The International Solvay Institute for Chemistry was founded a year later, in 1913.They have been held in Brussels every three years since 1911. These conferences saw the interpretation of quantum physics, the birth of the theory of relativity and the emergence of a new way of studying chemistry. As a result, the Solvay archives bear witness to the history of physics and chemistry in the 20th century, as well as the evolution of international scientific research.

Part of the collection that will become part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register are the archives of the International Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry, which cover the period of 1910-1962.
The listing by UNESCO is a joint project led by two universities in Belgium: the Université Libre Bruxelles (ULB) the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).
You can learn more about this fascinating part of history on the Solvay Science Project website, where the archives are freely accessible.
