In 2021, Belgium has emerged as a leader in research and development (R&D) investment in Europe, allocating 3.43% of its GDP to this sector, according to the Federal Secretary of State for Science Policy Thomas Dermine. This surpasses the 3% target set by the EU in 2000 under the Lisbon strategy. The country's consistent growth in R&D spending, relative to its GDP, from 2011 to 2021 has also propelled it to the forefront of the world's most innovative nations.
