Belgium has committed to making its chocolate 100% sustainable by 2030 with our “Beyond Chocolate initiative”. It is a partnership for a sustainable Belgian chocolate industry. Partners in the initiative are working to end deforestation, stimulate education for future generations and provide a living income for cocoa growers. Thanks to the support of the Belgian Ministry for Development Cooperation, 1.5 million euros is now available for the co-financing of value chain projects that improve, innovate and accelerate progress towards closing the living income gaps in supply chains linked to the Belgian chocolate sector.
While enjoying smooth chocolate, have you thought about what does it cost, other than the price tag and, maybe, how much work-out you have to do to burn the calories? Let’s look at our challenges, especially in the cocoa growing regions.
The average cocoa farmer is far from earning a living income. The fact that many families in cocoa producing countries live below the poverty line often results in child labour and unjust working conditions (Click to read about how Belgian stands against child labour). Moreover, poverty pushes farmers to converting new land, often in protected areas, leading to a dramatic reduction of forest cover in West and Central Africa. Next to that, we also face gender inequality problems both in the farmland and in the market in need of more inclusive policies.

Currently, over 60 companies and organizations have joined the Beyond Chocolate partnership, covering about 90% of the Belgian chocolate production market and 57% of the Belgian chocolate consumption market. All companies and organizations that are part of Beyond Chocolate have committed to reaching the partnership’s end goals of zero deforestation and a living income for cocoa producers, as well as preserving biodiversity. By substantially intensifying their investments into the sustainable development of the cocoa sector in the coming years, retailers will take a closer look at their house brands, civil society organizations are encouraged to share learnings and appeal to their networks.
