1914年平安夜深夜，英国远征军 (BEF) 的士兵听到对面战壕里的德军唱起了圣诞颂歌 (carols) 和爱国歌曲 (patriotic songs)，还看到对方战壕边挂起了灯笼，摆放着小杉树 (fir tree)，战壕 (trench) 两边的士兵也开始隔着阵地喊话交流。
第二天，英德两国士兵来到无人区 (no man's land) 碰面，交换礼物，合影留念，还有些人即兴 (impromptu) 踢起了足球，他们还一起安葬阵亡者 (casualties)，修补战壕和防空洞 (dugouts)。节礼日过后，无人区的碰面就渐渐消失了 (dwindled out)。
