A new study indicates that the biological limit of human age is 194 years.

A mathematical model published in npj Aging explores a hypothetical future where major diseases andic cellular hallmarks of aging are completely eradicated. Researchers isolated somatic mutations—the random, non-heritable DNA changes that gradually pile up in cells throughout our lives.

They discovered a stark biological asymmetry across organs: while renewing tissues like the liver and skin can replace damaged cells and theoretically function for thousands of years, non-dividing cells in the brain and heart cannot. These vital organs act as permanent bottlenecks, absorbing genetic errors over a lifetime until failure becomes inevitable.

Without any genetic degradation, the model's non-aging baseline human had a median lifespan of 1,759 years; however, introducing somatic mutations slashed that number to just 156 years, with an absolute upper range of 146 to 194 years. This theoretical experiment is not a prediction of imminent super-longevity, but rather a warning for future medicine. Even if biotech can reverse cellular aging and cure chronic disease, scientists will still have to solve the fundamental, entropic problem of spontaneous DNA decay to push human lifespans past this cellular ceiling.
