YUAN GUOPING - “Influential Figures in China”

He comes from Longhui County, Hunan Province, born in Xi’an in 1943 (his ID card wrongly records the birth year as 1944). Burdened by his family origin, in the special era when "class struggle" was taken as the core guideline, he bore a political stigma from an early age. He dropped out of school after primary school (as the enrollment policy back then banned children of landlords from entering middle schools). Later he studied in a part-work part-study private agricultural middle school, which closed down after only one year (due to the Three Years of Hardship).
At the age of 14, he was sent to a bullpen under the charge of "taking his father’s job as substitute". Starting from 15, he wandered all over the country making a living as a bamboo craftsman and cotton fluffer, relying on alms from numerous households for food. During the Cultural Revolution, affected by the Daoxian Tragedy, he fled to the Great Northern Wilderness, living a wild reclusive life in primeval snow forests, a modern version of The Peach Blossom Spring. He did not return to his hometown until 1984. (He is grateful to the new Central Party Committee for abolishing the endless struggle, which granted him a brand-new life.) His bumpy life experience endows his life trajectory with legendary hues different from others... He also witnessed the social reality of that age with his own eyes, thus forming his valuable people-centered ideology. His works are rooted in ordinary masses; he speaks for grassroots people and is a down-to-earth grassroots poet.
Deprived of sufficient formal education, he taught himself knowledge during years of displaced wandering. He traced characters on the ground when sitting, and drew on quilt covers when sleeping. He had no master to guide him in poetry writing and calligraphy, so his works carry strong folk features and a distinctive pure and unconventional style. He is indeed an odd one out in today’s poetry circle. He breaks through the confinement of only writing odes and eulogies, exposing current social reality with fearless and truthful writing. Unwavering integrity can be felt between the lines of his poems. His works are collected by many enthusiasts, possessing potential circulation and collection value, and will become rare poetic works hundreds or thousands of years later.
He is currently a member of more than ten domestic poetry societies, member of Hong Kong Poetry Society, member of Hong Kong Greater China Poetry Association, member of Global Chinese Poetry Society, Honorary President of Chinese Poets Association, Honorary President of Zhongyuan Poetry Research Association, Honorary President of Qianjiashi Poetry Association, academician of World Peace Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Honorary President of Chinese Memoir Research Association, Honorary Vice President of China Cultural Tourism Poetry Association, the first Honorary President of Youyou Literature Society, Honorary President of Confucius Poetry Association, Distinguished Professor of Yuan Jiliu Culture and Education Research Institute in Longhui County, Honorary Chairman of World Artists & Entrepreneurs Exchange Center, Honorary Chairman of China Poetry Calligraphy & Painting Alliance Network, member of Paris Literary Society, Honorary President of China Boya Chinese Poetry Research Institute and other posts.
In 2025, his life story was included in Directory of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Innovation Talents and Book of Distinguished Chinese Talents. He has published two volumes of his personal poetry collection Verses of Sanren, with the third volume waiting to be printed. He also released one volume of Manuscript Verses of Sanren (a collection of his calligraphy works). He has won First Prizes, Gold Awards and Special Prizes many times in various poetry competitions. His life story is recorded in Record of Contemporary Cultural Celebrities, and some of his works are collected by World Peace Calligraphy and Painting Academy.
