Belgium has launched the Ensor 2024 cultural programme, a year-long series of events to celebrate the renowned Flemish Master James Ensor (1860-1949), on the 75th anniversary of his death. The activities will be held in Ostend, Brussels and Antwerp.
James Ensor: The Visionary Painter

Ensor began to draw at the age of 13, then he went to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He belonged to the avant-garde movement of the early 20th century. The artist started out by painting realistic scenes in a somber style but subsequently used brighter colours and bizarre subjects. As a brilliant painter and visionary, Ensor tackled every kind of subject, becoming famous for genre scenes, still lives, portraits and particularly self-portraits, landscapes, masks and skeletons.

A Year Long, Countrywide Celebration

With 38 paintings and some 650 drawings, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp have the largest collection of Ensor's work in the world. From September 2024, it will host one of the main exhibitions, looking at how Ensor related to international contemporaries in impressionism and expressionism.
Ostend, a coastal city Ensor spent most of his life in, will celebrate his work with exhibitions, music, walks, theatre and film. James Ensor House, where the painter lived, has been completely renovated and resumed public visit since late 2020.

In Brussels, the Ensor collections of the Royal Library and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium will be brought together for the first time in one large collection. In the exhibition "James Ensor. Inspired by Brussels", visitors will discover how the city helped to shape Ensor's quirky and characteristic visual language.
